Have you ever finished a box of holiday treats and thought, "This container is too sturdy to throw away?" I know I have! There is something so rewarding about taking items destined for the recycling bin and engineering them into high-end showpieces for your home . Today, I’m going to show you how to take common household containers—like cookie tins and acrylic chocolate boxes—and upscale them into professional-grade designer storage that looks like it came straight from a high-end furniture boutique.

Empty tin containers (repurposed biscuit or cookie tins)
Empty chocolate boxes (transparent plastic containers like Ferrero Rocher or quality cardboard)
Scrap cardboard (used for structural levelling of the base)
Contact paper or decorative craft paper (for lining and aesthetic finishing)
Photo frames (selected to match the base dimensions of the container)
Glass panels (standard panels from the selected photo frames)
Assorted embellishments (gems, crystals, and decorative trims)
Tools
Hot glue gun (for immediate bonding)
Adhesives (Wood glue or Tacky glue for project durability)
Cutting tools (precision scissors or a sharp craft knife)
Measuring tool (standard ruler)

The Permanent Bonding Hack: For functional storage, i always recommend my “adhesive duo.” Use a combination of Fix-All or wood glue for a long-term professional bond and supplement it with hot glue for an immediate hold so you can keep working without the wait .
Label Removal Hack: Transparent chocolate boxes must be completely free of residue to maintain that high-end look. My favorite trick is to apply gentle heat—like from a hair dryer—or use a specialized adhesive remover to ensure the surface remains crystal clear .
Structural Integrity Hack: Most containers have a slight dip at the bottom. I like to use strips of scrap cardboard stacked in layers to reinforce and level the base; this prevents the bottom from pressing inward and ensures your decorative frames sit perfectly flush .
Paper Application Hack: For a seamless finish on glass panels, you can remove the wax backing from contact paper to affix it directly to the glass. Alternatively, I find it easiest to insert customized craft paper behind the glass within the frame prior to assembly for a clean, layered look .
Ghosting Prevention: If your original container has bright colors or branding, i suggest applying a quick coat of white primer or paint before adding your paper or mirrors. This ensures the original design doesn’t “ghost” through your glamorous new layers .
Instructions
Project 1: Round Snowflake Glam Tin
Prep the Lid Mirror: Paint a black round mirror frame with a silver metallic paint marker. Once dry, apply self-adhesive rhinestone trim around the sides of the frame.
Level the Lid: Stack three layers of foam board inside the back cavity of the mirror. Glue a piece of popsicle stick wood on top of the foam to create a sturdy, flat bonding surface.
Embellish the Tin: Glue silver beaded necklace along the bottom rim of the tin.
Attach Trim: Apply rhinestone trim just below the lip of the container using tacky glue. Use clips to secure it while it dries overnight.
Build the Legs: Remove caps from four ornament balls and snip the tips. Glue a ring of silver beads around each ball, then insert a diamond gem into the top. Glue these to the bottom of the tin.
Add Final Bling: Use a gem picker tool and tacky glue to place a small round gem in the center of the existing snowflake designs on the tin.
Assemble: Glue the prepared mirror to the center of the tin lid using hot glue on the wood/foam stack.
Project 2: Rectangular Keepsake Box for the Vanity
Decorate the Sides: Apply silver rhinestone cluster trim around the body of the rectangular tin using hot glue sparingly to avoid clumping.
Create Pedestal Legs: Repeat the ornament ball and gem technique using smaller Dollar Tree gems. Glue these as close to the outer corners of the box as possible so they are visible.
Embellish the Mirror: Take a scalloped-edge mirror and wrap the sides and top of the frame in rhinestone trim. Use a silver paint marker to touch up any remaining black areas.
Seal the Edges: Glue silver beaded necklace around the inner edge of the mirror to hide the frame seam.
Lid Attachment: Glue two layers of foam board into the back of the scalloped mirror. Apply hot glue to the foam and center the mirror onto the rectangular lid.
