💡Sandy’s Crafting Tips & Hacks
The Coffee Cup Handle Hack: Don’t throw away those plastic coffee cups! Use a soldering tool to melt the handles off cleanly. They have a sophisticated curve that, once embellished, looks exactly like expensive metal hardware.
The Glue String Removal Hack: Nothing ruins a “high-end” look faster than glue webs. Once your project is cool, use a dry, soft-bristled paintbrush to sweep them away and keep your chrome finishes sparkling.
The Permanent Bonding Hack: Since these are functional pieces (like trays), you need a strong bond. Use Fix-All or E6000 for that permanent, “forever” hold, and use hot glue only to keep things steady while the stronger adhesive cures.
The Soldering Hole Hack: Here’s a pro secret: use your soldering tool to melt tiny “dimples” into your plastic handles before gluing gems. This allows the pointy end of the gem to sit flush, making it way more durable and professional-looking.
The Design Detail Hack: To hide any messy seams where the handles or rings meet, just wrap a bit of silver beaded necklace or rhinestone ribbon around the joint. It covers the glue and makes the whole set look cohesive.
Instructions
Project 1: The Glitzy Napkin Holder Tealight
Glitter the glass: Brush Mod Podge onto the long stem of a glass tealight holder. Sprinkle silver glitter liberally and set it instantly using a quick coat of hairspray to prevent shedding.
Prep the base: Take a silver chrome napkin holder and hot glue three medium ornament balls to the bottom edge. Slip two smaller balls into the gaps for a tiered, reflective look.
Assemble: Stand the napkin holder on its side. Slide the glittered tealight holder through the center gap and secure it with a small dot of hot glue at the contact points.
Final detail: Wrap the top rim of the glass with self-adhesive rhinestone ribbon to hide the raw glass edge.
Project 2: The Jeweled Napkin Holder Vase
Stack the holders: Take two or more silver napkin holders and stack them vertically to create a taller architectural base.
Add the bling: Adhere clear diamond-shaped gems to the centers of the napkin holder framework to create a “jeweled column” effect.
Insert the vessel: Slide a thin glass or acrylic tube into the center of the stacked holders to support your dried flowers or greenery.
Style: This piece works beautifully as a narrow, vertical accent on a side table or mantel where space is limited.
Project 3: The Cylindrical Vase Wireless Table Lamp
Build the pedestal: Turn a silver candle holder upside down. Glue an 11-inch tall clear acrylic vase to the top using Fix-All or hot glue.
Embellish the vase: Apply vertical strips of self-adhesive rhinestone ribbon down the length of the vase, stopping just before the top rim.
Assemble the shade: Use a wire basket painted silver. Insert a salvaged metal frame from an old lampshade to allow it to sit level on the vase.
The finial: Glue a large diamond gem into a plastic wine glass base and mount it to the top of the basket shade.
Light it up: Hang a wireless remote-controlled light bulb or drop a battery-operated puck light inside for a cordless glow.
Project 4: The Etched “Tea Cup Handle” Serving Tray
Harvest the handles: Place a plastic coffee mug face down. Use a hot soldering tool to melt through the handle joints. Repeat for four handles.
Smooth the joints: Use the hot tip of the soldering iron to melt away any jagged plastic on the handles until the edges are flush.
Attach to tray: Hot glue two mug handles to each side of a nickel-plated iron tray to create elegant, curved grips.
Create custom legs: Snip the caps off four silver ornament balls. Glue a small diamond gem into each and adhere the balls directly to the four bottom corners of the tray.
Bling the handles: Use a gem picker to add rows of tiny crystals along the curve of the handles for a finished, professional look.
