Have you ever walked through a high-end furniture store (think Z Gallerie or Pottery Barn) and seen those beautiful sunburst mirrors that cost hundreds of dollars? I would look at those price tags and think to myself: “There’s got to be a better way to beautify my home without that hefty price tag!” Today, I’m going to show you how to take something you may already have in your kitchen—some silver plastic spoons—and use them as embellishments—to make two sunburst-style mirrors. These large, round mirrors are one-of-a-kind and the best part is they only cost me a few dollars to make.
📺 WATCH: See how the spoons are used as embellishments here.

💡Sandy’s Crafting Tips & Hacks
The Glue String Removal Hack: If you’re like me and hate those pesky hot glue strings that look like “spider webs," my favorite trick to get rid of them is: once the glue has cooled, take a dry paintbrush with soft bristles and simply twirl them away. It keeps your reflective chrome and glass surfaces sparkling like they came straight from a store shelf!
The Permanent Bonding Hack: For heavy wall mirrors, always use a combination of Fix-All or E6000 for a long-term professional bond and then I like to supplement with a tiny bit of hot glue for an immediate hold so you don’t have to wait hours for it to dry.
The Zero-Waste Spoon Hack: If you know me, I aspire to be zero-waste! When you snap the round heads off your spoons for the “petal” design, save those handles. They are perfect for linear “sunray” designs or textured vases, so nothing goes to the trash.
Camouflaging Seams: Use silver beaded necklace or chrome car trim to hide messy joints between the mirror and the frame for a professional boutique finish.
The Opaque Foundation Hack: If you are using a tan wood panel or cardboard, I recommend applying two coats of silver metallic paint first. This ensures the original material doesn't "ghost" through the gaps between your spoons, giving you a professional boutique finish.
Instructions
Design 1: The Layered “Petal” Sunburst Mirror
Prepare the Petals: To get started, we’re going to prepare our petals. We’ll begin by snapping the round heads off approximately 100 silver plastic spoons. Remember to set those handles aside for your next project because we don’t want anything going to the trash!
Create the Base: Next, we’ll create a clean designer foundation. We’re going to paint our 12-inch round wood panel with silver metallic paint. This ensures that our frame looks cohesive and high-end from every angle.
Build the Bloom: Now for the fun part: we’re going to build our layered bloom. We’ll start adhering the spoon heads in concentric circles around the wood panel. I find it’s best to start from the outer edge and work your way inward, overlapping each row slightly to create that beautiful 3D dimension.
Anchor the Center: Next, it’s time to anchor our center. We’ll bond our round mirror right to the center of the prepared frame. For a piece this substantial, I always suggest using a strong permanent adhesive reinforced with a few dots of hot glue for an instant hold.
Boutique Finishing Touches: Finally, we’ll add our signature detailing. We’re going to glue a string of silver beaded necklace all around the edge of the mirror. This is the perfect trick to hide any tiny gaps or exposed wood, giving your mirror a flawless professional store shine.
Design 2: The Linear “Starburst” Radiant Mirror
Construct the Base: To get started, we’re going to build our foundation. We’ll begin by adhering our 12-inch round mirror to a matching wood panel using a strong permanent adhesive like Fix-All or E6000 for a professional-grade hold. Once that’s set, we’re going to flip it over and secure a 14-inch wired wreath ring to the back of the panel to provide essential structural support for our sunburst rays.
Modify the Materials: Next, let’s prepare our pieces. We’re going to take several packs of silver plastic spoons and snap off the handles. As you know, I aspire to be zero-waste, so make sure you set those round heads aside for a future “petal” mirror design—nothing goes in the trash in my studio!
Create the Sun’s Rays: Now for the fun part: it’s time to build the radiant design. We’ll adhere our spoon handles vertically and perpendicular to the mirror’s edge all around the wreath form. I recommend taking your time with the spacing to ensure your “sun’s rays” are even, creating that beautiful high-end architectural silhouette.
Cover the Seams: It’s time to hide our mechanics for a flawless finish. We’re going to cover any exposed wood or tiny gaps between the mirror and the base with self-adhesive chrome car trim. This is one of my favourite secrets for getting a high-end reflective finish that masks the budget materials perfectly.
Add the Boutique Bling: The last thing to do is add our final designer touches. We’ll go in and apply clear acrylic gems to the tips of each spoon handle to catch the light from every angle. Finally, we’ll frame the inner mirror with a string of silver beaded necklace for maximum sparkle and that professional store-bought shine.
