💡Sandy’s Crafting Tips & Hacks
The Adhesive Duo Hack: Use a combination of Fix-All or E6000 (or wood glue for frames) for a long-term professional bond and supplement it with hot glue for an immediate hold while you work.
The “Bleeding” Brush Handle: When applying clear adhesives like Fix-All to glittered surfaces, be careful with colored tools. I discovered that blue paintbrush handles can actually bleed dye onto gold glitter! Switch to a tan or neutral handle to keep your colors pure.
The Bubble-Free Vinyl Hack: When applying mirrored paper to glass or wood, use a squeegee or the edge of a credit card to rub away air bubbles as you go. This ensures a flawlessly smooth, mirror-reflective finish that looks like solid glass.
The Hidden Joint Hack: Cardboard boxes aren’t always perfect! If your flaps don’t meet correctly, use thin strips of wood or particle board to fill gaps and create a level surface before you apply your outer fabric or mirrors.
The Glue String Removal Hack: Keep those reflective surfaces sparkling! Once your glue has cooled, take a dry paintbrush with soft bristles and simply twirl those pesky hot glue “spiderwebs” away instantly .
Instructions
1. Reinforce the Foundation: Fill any dips in the bottom of your box with scrap cardboard. Line the interior with gold glitter faux leather fabric, using tacky glue for a smooth surface and hot glue to anchor the edges.
2. Prep the Structural Shelves: Disassemble your gold glitter frames. Remove the kickstands and cardboard. Use a paintbrush handle to apply Fix-All and dots of hot glue to the frame rim, then press the glass back in. This ensures the “shelf” can hold the weight of your trinkets.
3. Assemble the Interior: Insert two gold frames into the ends of the box—the snug fit provides structural integrity. Insert a third gold frame into the center to create cubbies. Use a level to ensure it’s straight and secure it with hot glue, hiding any messy residue with rhinestone trim.
4. Strengthen the Exterior: Glue a trimmed particle board sign to the bottom of the box with wood glue and weight it down overnight. This prevents the box from sagging. Paint any remaining exposed orange or blue cardboard edges with white acrylic paint.
5. Decorate the Sides: Cover the two larger sides with silver glitter faux leather. For the smaller sides, reassemble your silver frames with silver glitter vinyl behind the glass and glue the entire frame onto the box using a wood glue and hot glue hybrid.
6. Lighting and Base: Glue a magnet to the inside top of the unit so you can easily “snap” a rechargeable puck light in and out. For a freestanding look, bling out two Dollar Tree floating shelves with gems and glue them to the bottom to create a sturdy, decorative pedestal.
