Today, I’m going to show you how to upscale basic Dollar Tree wood pieces and unexpected items like pencil holders into two massive, professional-grade table lanterns. These lanterns feature a shimmering mirror-like chrome finish that looks incredibly expensive, making them the perfect statement pieces for your entryway or fireplace.

Thick wooden panels (6x6 inch and 4.5x4.5 inch)
Wooden dowels (12-inch)

Pillar Mirror Secret: When wrapping your wooden dowels in silver contact paper, remember to peel the protective plastic film off at the end. This reveals the true mirror-reflective finish that makes your support pillars look like solid chrome.
The 2mm Fix: If your mirror tile is slightly smaller than your wood panel, use a white metallic marker to draw a thin line around the exposed wood edge. It blends perfectly with the silver and creates a professional, seamless finish.
Tacky Glue Timing: For precision tasks like centering wood panels or applying metallic paper, use clear tacky glue instead of hot glue. It dries smooth without unsightly clumps and gives you a “grace period” to adjust the alignment before it sets.
Soldering Shortcut: Using a soldering tool is a genius way to modify plastic wine glass stems or melt precise holes for toppers. Just remember to use caution, as it heats up quickly, and unplug it as soon as you are done.
Instructions
Wrap and Erect the Pillars: Start by wrapping four 12-inch wooden dowels in mirror contact paper. Secure them vertically into the corners of a 6x6 wood base (which has been covered in metallic foil paper) using my “adhesive duo” of Fix-All for long-term strength and hot glue for an instant hold.
Mirror the Foundation: Mirror the center of your base by adhering a 4x4 mirror tile. To add depth and hide any raw edges, frame the tile with a string of silver beaded necklace. This reflective platform will beautifully bounce the light from a tall LED candle.
Construct the Tiered Top: Build the lid by bonding a 4.5-inch wood panel onto a 6x6 wood panel. Cover all exposed wood with metallic foil paper and frame the top with a glitter-bordered mirror tile. Cap the center with a crystal doorknob or a custom gem topper for a regal finish.
Bling the Mesh Lantern: For the second design, wrap a silver mesh pencil holder in self-adhesive rhinestone ribbon. Modify a plastic wine glass stem with a soldering tool to create a flattened pedestal and bond it to the bottom of the holder using tacky glue and Fix-All.
Build the Elevated Base: Invert a round candle holder mirror and glue four small silver ornament balls (with the ends snipped off) to the corners as legs. To finish, apply a tiny dollop of hot glue to the rim of your pencil holder and let it dry—this creates an “anti-slide” grip when you set the lantern on its mirrored base.
