💡Sandy’s Crafting Tips & Hacks
Dry-Fit Before You Glue: Lay out all ornament balls and frame pieces first to check spacing and alignment. This prevents awkward gaps and saves time fixing mistakes later.
Use Dual Adhesives for Strength + Speed: Pair a strong adhesive (like E6000 or Fix-All) with hot glue. The hot glue holds pieces in place instantly, while the stronger adhesive cures for long-term durability.
Fix Warped Wood Easily: Dollar store wood pieces are often slightly warped. Clamp them together while the glue dries to create a flat, secure bond.
Cover Imperfections with Trim: Chrome car trim and bead garlands are perfect for hiding seams, uneven edges, or small gaps while elevating the overall look.
Use a Gem Picker Tool: A gem picker makes placing tiny crystals quick and precise. It’s a small investment that speeds up detail work significantly.
Instructions
Create the Mirror Base: Start by attaching the 12-inch mirror to the wooden palette using a strong adhesive. Because thin wood can warp, clamp the pieces together and allow them to cure overnight. This ensures a flat, secure base before mounting it onto the platter. If you skip the real mirror, the platter alone still provides a reflective surface—just slightly softer in clarity.
Prep the Outer Frame: Paint one side of the 18-inch wooden wreath ring. Since most of it will be covered, the finish doesn’t need to be perfect—just enough to hide the raw wood. Once dry, apply chrome car trim along the outer edge. This small detail instantly elevates the look and gives the frame a clean, metallic finish.
Attach the Platter and Frame: Flip the platter upside down and apply strong adhesive along the rim. Add a bit of hot glue for immediate hold, then press the wooden wreath ring into place. Centering is key here—work quickly before the hot glue sets. Once aligned, reinforce the bond with additional glue and let everything cure.
Add a Hanging Hook: Cut a metal hanger from a picture frame backing, leaving a small border of cardboard around it. Glue it securely to the back of the wreath ring using a strong adhesive. This will support the weight of the finished mirror..
Install the Center Mirror: Apply adhesive to the back of the wooden palette (not too close to the edges), then press it into the center of the platter. Make sure it’s properly aligned before leaving it to cure.
Layer the Wire Wreath Ring: Attach the 14-inch wire wreath ring on top of the platter using adhesive. This layer creates depth and serves as the base for the decorative elements. Allow it to fully cure before moving on.
Add Ornament Ball Details: This is where the mirror starts to take on its glam look - Place small ornament balls between the outer wires of the wreath ring. Angle the caps inward and secure each with a small amount of hot glue.
Second & Third Layers: Continue placing ornament balls between the inner wires, building dimension as you go. Staggering the placement slightly adds depth and visual interest.
Fill the Inner Frame: Use larger ornament balls to cover the exposed wooden wreath ring. Position them slightly angled and glue into place. If you don’t have larger ornaments, you can continue with smaller ones—just ensure full coverage.
Conceal Seams: Wrap silver bead garland along the inner edge where the frame meets the platter. This hides seams and adds a refined border.
Add Sparkle with Gems: Apply small amounts of clear glue between ornament balls and place flatback gems in the gaps. Even minimal placement adds a noticeable touch of sparkle without overwhelming the design.
Optional LED Lighting: For an extra statement, weave battery-operated LED string lights through the wire wreath ring. Keep the wiring subtle and hide the battery pack behind the mirror. Position it so the power switch remains accessible.
