DIY Cookie Tin Lantern Tutorial: High-End Glam From Recycled Metal
Makeover an empty holiday treat container and cardboard rolls into a sophisticated, mirrored statement piece.

I never toss out those empty holiday cookie tins anymore! While the treats may be gone, the sturdy metal containers make a perfect base for high-end home decor. This project takes a standard rectangular tin and upcycles it into a glowing, "boutique-style" lantern. By combining recycled cardboard rolls with reflective contact paper and shimmering rhinestone trim, you can create a luxury accent piece for your fireplace or side table for next to nothing.

Rectangular cookie tin (cleaned and dried)
Self-adhesive rhinestone trim (with glass or crystal pieces)
5 Silver ornament balls (for the feet and top finial)
Cardboard rolls (recycled from contact paper or paper towels)
Silver metallic/reflective contact paper
Small scraps of craft foam
Round framed mirror (Dollar Tree) or a round acrylic mirror
Mini mirror tiles and clear gem stickers
Two silver plastic bowls (one large, one small - Dollar Tree)
Silver beaded necklace
LED battery-operated candles
Tools
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Fix-All or E6000 adhesive

The Pillar Reinforcement Hack: Trying to glue a hollow cardboard tube to flat metal is tricky. Glue a small piece of craft foam inside the end of the tube, leaving a tiny bit sticking out. This "plug" gives your glue a much larger surface area to bond with the tin.
Reflective Depth Hack: Applying mirrored contact paper to the cardboard pillars and placing a round mirror at the base of the lantern maximizes the glow and shimmer of your candles.
The Bead Border Trick: If you get a little messy with the glue while attaching your pillars, don’t worry. Wrap a string of silver beads around the base of each pillar. It completely hides glue residue and adds a polished, mirrored finish to the seams.
Permanent Bonding Hack: For structural projects, use a combination of Fix-All or E6000 for a long-term professional bond and supplement it with hot glue for an immediate hold.
The Glue String Removal Hack: Keep your mirrors and metallic surfaces sparkling by using a dry paintbrush with soft bristles to sweep away pesky hot glue webs once the glue has cooled.
Instructions
1. Bling the Base and Lid: Measure your rhinestone trim against the lid of the cookie tin. Cut it to size first, then peel the backing and wrap it around the edge of the lid and the top rim of the container. This adds sparkle and hides any printed “best before” dates on the metal.
2. Prepare the Pillars: Cut four rigid cardboard rolls to your desired height. Wrap them in silver metallic contact paper. Insert foam plugs into the bottom ends of the rolls to create a solid surface for the adhesive.
3. Erect the Pillars: Using a combination of Fix-All for a permanent hold and hot glue for speed, stand your four pillars upright in the corners of the tin. Use silver beads to cover any visible glue or gaps at the base of each pillar.
4. Add Height and the Interior Base: Flip the tin and glue four silver ornament balls (caps removed) to the corners as legs. For the interior, take a round mirror and cover the frame with mini mirror tiles and gem stickers. Place this inside the lantern to act as a reflective tray for your candles.
5. Build the Dome Top: Flip a large silver bowl upside down and center it on the tin lid, gluing it where the scalloped edges touch the metal. Glue the smaller silver bowl upside down on top of the first one. Use silver beads to hide the seams between the two bowls.
6. Final Assembly: Melt a small hole in the top bowl with your glue gun tip and insert the stem of a final silver ornament ball to create a handle. Place your lid onto the pillars and style with battery-operated LED candles for a safe, high-end glow.
