I couldn’t bring myself to throw away the beautiful gold Godiva box from the holidays, and it sparked an idea to turn my empty packaging into functional pieces for my shelves. It is truly amazing what you can create when you start looking at “trash”—like plastic candy trays and cookie lids—as designer-style materials rather than things to toss in the bin. Today, I’m showing you how to turn these everyday holiday leftovers into two distinct, shimmering storage boxes that look like they came straight from a high-end gift shop.

Empty Godiva box and deep cookie box
Two-toned gold and silver foil placemats
Gold framed Dollar Tree mirrors
Ferrero Rocher plastic foil trays (repurposed as textured panels)
Small gold ornament balls (for Godiva box legs)
Plastic St. Patrick’s Day pots (for cookie box legs)
Rhinestone acrylic gem trim
Thin wooden panel (for base reinforcement)
Gold metallic paint and gold/silver metallic markers
Acrylic gems and fabric rose leaf trim
Scrap packaging foam
Tools
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Mod Podge (Gloss) and foam brushes
Weld Bond, Fix-All, or Wood Glue

💡 Sandy’s Favorite Crafting Tips & Hacks
The Cling Wrap Brush Saver: If you hate washing out brushes between coats, wrap the foam brush head tightly in cling wrap. It keeps the paint or Mod Podge airtight so you can reuse the brush for weeks without it drying out.
The “Lazy” Box Cutter Edge: To get a perfectly flush edge with foil placemats, turn your box lid upside down and use a box cutter to slice along the rim. This is much easier and cleaner than struggling with scissors.
The Glossy Surface Prep: Always sand down shiny or glossy boxes before you start painting. If you skip this, your paint will likely peel off in one giant piece like a sheet of cling wrap once it dries.
The Mirror Leveling Trick: Most dollar store mirror frames aren’t perfectly flat on the back. Use a piece of scrap packaging foam to fill the “dip” in the center so the mirror sits perfectly level and secure against your box lid.
Instructions
Prep the Foundation: Sand down the glossy exterior of your chocolate and cookie boxes thoroughly to create a textured surface that paint and glue can actually grab onto.
Line the Interiors: Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the inside walls and base, then press foil placemats into the corners. Use clips or clothespins to hold the edges down while the adhesive sets.
Reinforce and Level the Base: Score and snap a thin wooden panel to the size of your box bottom. Secure it with wood glue to prevent the cardboard from bowing when you store heavier items inside.
Install Custom Legs: Paint four small plastic pots or ornament balls with a gold metallic marker and bond them to the corners of your reinforced base to give the box an upscale, high-gloss presence.
Apply the Mirrored Lid: Bond a framed mirror to the top of the lid using Weld Bond and foam supports. Finish the look by masking the edges with rhinestone trim and fabric leaves to create a seamless, designer-style finish.
