Wired baskets are a staple in my home because they hold a lot and they give the space a light airy feeling. One of my favourite things to do is taking a basic wired basket and upscaling it into a high-end looking showpiece for my bedroom or living room. Today, we’re utilizing the geometric patterns of Dollar Tree baskets to make a couple of beautiful decor pieces that will also be functional - including a tiered crystal chandelier and a mirrored tray. Using my signature 'Spoon Handle Chrome' technique, you can turn a $1.25 basket into a weighted, metallic piece of furniture that looks like it came from an expensive gallery.

💡Sandy’s Crafting Tips & Hacks
The Reach-Inside Technique: When gluing spoons to a wire basket, don’t apply glue to the spoon first—it gets messy. Instead, hold the spoon in place, reach your glue gun inside the basket, and apply the glue through the wire onto the back of the spoon. This keeps the front of your project clean and prevents hot glue clumps.
Alternating Layers: For a full, textured look, glue your first row of spoon handles with small gaps. Then, place the second row with the skinnier ends tucked into those gaps. This creates a “woven” metallic effect that completely hides the wire frame.
Zip Tie Camouflage: White zip ties stand out against metallic decor. Once your structure is secure, use a silver metallic paint marker to color the zip ties so they blend perfectly with the wire baskets.
Mixed Metal Appeal: Don’t be afraid to stack silver and gold baskets together. The contrast adds visual interest and makes the piece look more like a custom designer item than a dollar store craft.
Instructions
1. Embellish the Main Wastebasket
Prepare the Spoons: Separate the handles from the round heads of several packs of silver plastic spoons.
Apply the First Row: Glue the handles vertically around the top half of the large silver wastebasket, leaving a tiny gap between each one. Flush the top of the handle with the basket rim.
Fill the Gaps: Place a second row of handles into the gaps of the first row, alternating the skinny ends for a seamless look. Use the “reach-inside” glue technique to secure them.
Cover the Bottom: Repeat the process for the bottom half of the basket. Because the basket tapers, you will need fewer spoons for this section.
Bling the Seams: Peel and stick silver rhinestone trim around the center “seam” where the top and bottom spoon rows meet, and add another row around the very base.
2. Build the Pedestal Base
Join the Gold Baskets: Place one gold basket upside down. Place a second gold basket on top of it so the bottoms are touching. Secure them together with zip ties.
Add the Third Tier: Attach a third gold basket to the opening of the top basket using more zip ties.
Connect the Silver Top: Position your embellished silver wastebasket on top of the gold tower. Reach inside and zip tie the base of the silver basket to the top of the gold stack.
Finish the Hardware: Snip off the excess zip tie ends and paint the remaining plastic with a silver paint marker.
3. Assemble the Tabletop
Prep the Surface: Place the silver metallic mesh placemat onto the large silver platter.
Secure the Top: Center the platter on top of the silver wastebasket. (For extra stability, you can secure this with a few dabs of E6000 or hot glue).
